It’s time for another round of Reader Requests!
Ben wants to find a knife sharpener that sharpens knives by hand, not with a machine.
Kimberley would like to know where she can purchase Keebler Danish Wedding Cookies.
And Brenda said she moved here over a year ago and hasn’t found a hair stylist that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.
Please leave your recommendations and suggestions for any or all of these requests in the comments. Remember to leave contact information for the person you are recommending – I cannot put the requestor in touch with a particular business.
Let’s see if we can pull through for all three of these requests! If you’ve got a request that you’d like to see included in the next post, please email me at springsbargains@gmail.com. Be sure to check out previous Reader Requests posts, too!

Brenda, I have lived in the Springs for 7 yrs and have had poor luck getting a decent haircut too. About a year ago started going to The Salon Professional Academy at 4388 Austin Bluffs Parkway. It is a beauty school and haircuts are $11 but my daughter and I haven’t had a bad haircut after approximately 14 visits between us. Only draw back is you need to make sure you have at least an hour because the students check with the instructors several times during the haircut or coloring. I have used several different students and found they are all equally fantastic.
I take my knives to Naked Edge Cutlery at the Chapel Hills Mall. They only have one guy who does it there and I believe he told me he does it by hand, but I am not certain. I would suggest a call to them to ask. They do a really good job and he took one look at my knives and was telling me all kinds of things about them I would never have known
Here’s their number
(719) 598-4888
Carrie at Impressions Salon does a great job. 930-8671
I have my hair done by Lucy at Shear Competence on 8th street 444-0343 (a little far away, but worth it). She owns the studio and is the only person there. She charges me $35 for a color, cut and style – wonderful!!! If I had to pay “regular” studio prices I would unfortunately have to quit having my hair colored and look my age :(
Thanks Susan, Naked Edge uses a machine that puts the edge back on it. I’m looking for someone that can do it by hand because it doesn’t damage the blade like a machine does and they can put a proper bevel on the blade itself.
Brenda, I too recommend the Salon Professional Academy. I love it and can get top-knotch services for a fraction of the cost. Carrie ran an article about them awhile back — http://springsbargains.com/tag/salon-professional-academy.
Ben, you can get a little hand-held doohickey in the sporting goods section at Walmart that has two small stones angled to sharpen your knife just by drawing it through. I think it’s about $5. I keep one in my cutlery drawer and use it to keep a good edge. It’s a no-brainer and works very well for me.
Hope that helps!

For a good and inexpensive hairstylist, I recommend Melinda a Cost Cutters, by King Soopers on Hartsel (off of Woodman/Lexington). She’s usually there Mon-Fri. I have been going to her and my 3 boys for about 4-5yrs and costs about $14 for adults, but if you sign up for the cost cutters club you can get $1-2 off coupons each month to save even more. Tell her Kim with the twin boys plus another son sent you. She’s awesome!!!
I get my hair cut with Deborah at Great Clips next door to the Albertsons at Centennial and Garden of the Gods. She is great, and really cheap. I believe she used to own a salon of her own, so she is very experienced. I can’t remember what regular price is there, but I see coupons for $5.99 every once in a while and try to use those. The only draw back is that you can’t make appointments, so you just have to call and find out when she is working and ask for her by name when you get there. The phone number for Great Clips is 598-3500.
Brenda, I recommend Angela at Austin Hair and Company on N. Academy. She is very sweet and does a nice job. Kids are $1 per their age and an adult cut is $19. Not sure what a cut and style is since I only get mine washed and cut.
I get my hair styled at Grand Illusions at Montebello and Academy (in the same building as the Wells Fargo drive through). There are several stylists there that I would recommend. Jodi styles my hair and at least one of my friends now goes to her as well. Jodi does fantastic work with color and I *always* get great results. And Lorraine and Jen have been doing my nails for years and both do great work. Great salon!
One more note: Grand Illusions is not going to be as cheap as Cost Cutters or Great Clips, but they are not as expensive as some of the designer salons in town. I recommend them because of the consistently high quality of service I have received there.
I *highly* recommend Toni and Guy Academy on the south side of town. I know it sounds freaky to get your hair done at an Academy, but there is trick: Ask for a *senior stylist.* These girls are just a few days away from graduating and being full price (they are the students who are further along in the program).
Also, Toni and Guy does a better job training their stylists than other schools….they learn over twice as many cuts, and they keep them up to date on trends. I’ve had my hair cut+highlighted six or seven times now and I’ve never had a bad cut.
thanks for the stylist idea Brenda!! I need one too!
Joni Ennis at The Hair Loft in Monument rocks! She does men, women AND little squirmy lively 5 yr. old boys. :-) Her number is (719) 488-1166. She’s super reasonable and does amazing work.
The Paul Mitchell School (118 West Colorado Ave, (719) 636-1426) is a great place to get an inexpensive haircut. Phase 1 is $8 and Phase 2 is $12. Just like with the Salon Professional Academy, it takes a little longer due to checks by the teachers, but I have been very happy with the results, as have other friends who have been there. Maybe if this is closer than SPA, you can try it!
CARRIE AT SUPERCUTS STARTED DOING MY HAIR AND I LOVE THAT SHE IS YOUNG, ENERGETIC AND RESPONSIVE TO WHAT YOU TELL HER YOU WANT. HER PHONE # IS 622-1421 SHE WORKS BETWEEN 2 DIFFERENT SUPERCUTS. CONSTITUTION AND POWERS, AND MURRAY AND FOUNTAIN I BELIEVE.
I second Carrie Thompson at Impressions Salon on the west side. I’ve been going to her for 7 years and know she’ll always do a nice job. Her cuts have gone up a bit in the past year but $20 isn’t too bad for a salon. Number is above but it is 930-8671.
Thanks for linking to that, Melissa – I was getting there, eventually. ;)
