So, now that you’ve seen the best prices on Thanksgiving dinner essentials, you’ve seen that in order to get the best possible price you’ll need to shop at about five different stores. Yeah, right – I don’t think there are deals good enough to make anyone do that the week of Thanksgiving! :)
Albertsons and Safeway are guaranteeing the lowest price on frozen turkey, but before you get too excited about price matching turkeys, make sure you read the fine print.
Here’s Safeway’s “Guaranteed Lowest Price on Frozen Turkeys” policy:
We will match any competitor’s coupon advertised price on USDA GRade A frozen turkeys. Just present competitor’s coupon, clipless coupon, or ad to your checker. All competitor’s rules, guidelines, and coupon terms apply. Price match does NOT apply to free turkey with purchase offer, Honeysuckle, Butterball, Empire, Jennie-O, Zacky Farms brands, and all fresh turkeys. Offer good through 11/26/09.
And here’s Albertsons “Turkey Price Guarantee”:
Albertsons will match* our Premium Honeysuckle White turkey price to the lowest price offered by City Market, King Soopers, or Safeway grocery ads through Thanksgiving.
*If you find a lower price from the retailers listed, we will refund the difference when you present your Albertsons receipt at your Albertsons store. See store for details.
So, honestly? I’m not sure those are guarantees at all. Safeway excludes just about every brand known to man – I guess you could maybe price match store brand turkeys? But I haven’t seen any store brand turkeys at any store other than Safeway itself.
Albertsons is a little better, I think, but I think they’ll only price match the Honeysuckle White turkey, and only with King Soopers, City Market, or Safeway’s ads.
Are you planning to price match a turkey anywhere this year, whether at Safeway, Albies, Target, or Walmart? Ever done it before? Is it worth the hassle?

I *think* Safeway is saying that they will price match the lowest price you can find on a turkey, but if you get it from them, you get store brand instead of the name brands. Seems like they might as well just skip it, IMHO.
I did price match once. There was a great price on Honeysuckle White turkeys at Albertsons, and there was a big snowstorm, so I didn’t want to drive into town. (I live in Falcon.) I took the ad to the Falcon Walmart to price match, and they didn’t think they could do it…so they called the manager, and he said they could, but they couldn’t also take my coupon for $2 off a Honeysuckle White turkey. So, I had her ring up all my stuff except the turkey, then I went to cust. service to ask to speak directly to the manager. He didn’t want to come from wherever he was to where I was, so he told them to just do it (I think to get rid of me). I really wanted to get at why they could match the price but not take the coupon since it was a manu. coupon (not from online, from an insert), but I never got to talk to him. With the sale match and coupon, I think it worked out to be something like 24 cents a pound…but I had to earn it.
