How many of you own a Kindle? Is it really the best thing to happen to books?

I do own a Kindle and I love it, but I don’t think it replaces books entirely. Sometimes if you love a book you want to have not just in digital format, or sometimes you want to borrow a book before buying, and right now you can’t borrow on Kindle.
But, one thing I would tell people about Kindle – they always think the print is the same as a computer and say, “I couldn’t stand to stare at that screen all day”, but that isn’t how Kindle works – no 60Hz flashing, no back light. Think of it more like an Etch a Sketch – it uses real magnetized ink, and the battery is used only to refresh a page – to “redraw” the sketch, which is then static until you turn the page again. Print looks GREAT – better than real books, really, and your eyes never get tired.

You can also get free books at Barnes & Noble… and download a free e-reader for your computer or iPhone. Or read them on the Nook, if you have one.

Go down the left side, and there is a link under ‘get started’ to download a free ereader. And under ‘browse’ there is a link to free books.

I also have a Kindle and love the convienence of it. There are so many books that you can get for free and they are always changing. I also enjoy the fact that no matter what time of day it is that I can get a new book. No more waiting for the bookstore to open! I wouldn’t say that a kindle or other ebook readers would replace books but is a great addition to those who love to read.

I dunno. I have a free Kindle application on my phone, so these free book deals make sense. My son and I read the entire Wizard of Oz on the phone, because it was new and fun and we could take turns reading together — he gets a small page, I get a small page. It worked great.

I’m fascinated with the Kindle technology, and would love to own and play with one just because I’m a gadget girl. However, I don’t think the KIndle or Nook are very good deals because neither integrates with the local library. If anyone knows of a half-way decent reader that does this, I’d love to hear about it. My number one source for reading material and audio books is the library.

I think that the free Kindle app for smartphones makes sense, if you already have the phone for other reasons. So far I’ve bought one book for the Kindle, only because it was backordered everywhere else, the queue was years long at the library, and my son was desperate for the next book in a series.

    Just some thoughts… :)

I have the Kindle app for my iPhone. I like it for those times when I’m trapped somewhere (getting my car fixed, doctor running late, etc.) but I can’t imagine ever reading all of my books on the phone.

I don’t have a ‘real’ Kindle. I’m much too cheap for that. :)

We got my Dad a Kindle for his birthday. He’s 68 and has always owned tons of books. He adores the Kindle and uses it every day. He has subscriptions to major newspapers on the Kindle, too. My Mom is sooo pleased that no more hard copy books are being brought into the house.

LOL, Rebecca! I have a friend that bought a Kindle for that reason – they couldn’t fit any more books in their house!
