Couponing FAQ: is it buy-one-get-one-free, or 50% off?

Lindsey emailed to ask this question:

Does King Soopers do 50% off an item if it is BOGO and you only buy one item?

Unfortunately, King Soopers’ buy-one-get-one-free sales ring up the first item as full price and the second at $0.00, so if you only buy one, it’s full price, not 50% off.

In some part of the country, with other Kroger affiliates and different grocery store chains, BOGO does ring up as 50% off, meaning you can just buy one and still get it on sale, but that’s not the case here.  I wonder if somehow it has to do with different laws in different states?

Relatedly, both King Soopers and Safeway’s official policies prohibit the use of two coupons on a BOGO sale, meaning you can’t use two $1/1 coupons on that type of sale.  Usually coupons for $1/2 are just fine, though.  Read more of their official policies here: King Soopers and Safeway.

I will tell you my experience, at KS, when a BOGO, if I buy one, I tell them when I go through the line and they give me 50% off. So it has worked for me!

  2. Nicole says:

Awhile back, Safeway would give you 50% off an item if you only bought one BOGO…I haven’t tried it for awhile, so I don’t know if they still do it…

  3. Alyssa says:

At King Soopers if a product is BOGO and I just want to get one I’ll just hold those items aside and ask the cashier. I will usually say, these are BOGO but I only need one, can I just get that for 50% off? I was told to do that by an employee one time when I was only getting one and they noticed and did it for me. The cashiers are always like sure!

  4. Sarah S says:

Every Kings I have ever been to (Denver area), if I am only getting one thing for a bogo sale I just tell the cashier and they manually adjust the price down by half. I’ve never had a cashier even blink an eye when I do this.

  5. Janet says:

I also have the same experience. I do this almost weekly. I have never had a problem with the cashier adjusting the BOGO to half off when I only purchase one.

  6. Carrie says:

Wow, you guys! All I want to know is… how on earth do you keep that straight when you’re checking out?! :)

Thanks for the tips, I’d never thought to ask!

  7. Lauren says:

Ugh – I’m sure that’s gotten me before, and I didn’t notice! I moved to Denver recently and assumed it was the same policy as my old Kroger.

I simply tell the cashier at Kings (Uintah Gardens or Fillmore) I only bought one…they always take half the value off for me….

  9. Judy Over says:

I am a checker at King Soopers and if you let us know you have a bogo item and only want to buy one we can manually ring it in at half price.
