Reader Request: good deal on a mattress

Julie needs your help finding a good deal on a mattress:

I am trying to find the best price on a mattress.  Where in town has the best deals?

Got a suggestion for Julie?  Please leave a comment!  I’m curious if any of you have ever shopped for mattresses at Goodwill – I know they sell new mattresses but haven’t ever compared prices.

I bought a queen size mattress from Goodwill. I was happy with the price and quality for what I needed it for. Their prices were comparable and, as I recall, cheaper than Sam’s Club. We will be buying another twin size mattress from Goodwill this week. These are new mattresses. Hope that helps a bit….

You know we actually ended up buying from Denver Mattress…I really didn’t want to go but am glad we did. We had bought from Goodwill prior, craigslist and they just were not comfy and didn’t hold up well. When we went into Denver mattress the last thing I wanted was a salesperson but the lady who helped us (I think she was the mgr) was amazing, and actually fits you to the mattresses to see what works best for both you and your spouse. I picked out a couple before she came along based on price but after she did her thing, had us lie down did these strange arm tests etc. we found one that I would never even have thought twice about and now 2 years later have no regrets and actually it came out to be a bit less expensive then the ones I was looking at. Yes, mattresses are an investment in my book but considering the amount of time you spend in bed it’s worth it! I want to say the ladies name was Susan though I am not sure that’s correct. She was just great, totally helpful and I actually forgot she was trying to sell a product since she wasn’t sales like or pushy at all just very informative. Good luck!

We got a mattress from Mattress Firm, because they were running a special when we needed it last summer. The delivery was included, I believe, and I thought the prices were reasonable. They had 3 different levels of quality to choose from, each in a different price range.

  4. Leah says:

We got a queen from goodwill also. Good price, not the most top of the line but I am going to buy a mattress topper from overstock for about 100 and it makes the total of the two still cheaper than most queen mattresses

We went to I think Matress Firm as well on Academy and Montebello they were not pushy we told them what we were looking for and I told them when I picked out the twin I needed I like this one but I only have this much they met me 1/2 way (which was where I wanted hehe) and threw in some pillows. I went back 3 ys ago and bought our queen bed the kind that comforms to your body oh my love it! They threw in pillows that are made out of the same material. We referred a friend and they rcvd 15% off their purchase and when we go back which we won’t need to for a while we will get the same.

i shopped around for my son’s bunkbed– 2 twins size matresses. Goodwill and the arc are comparable to eachother decent prices but lower quality matresses. i actually found a great deal at Matress King off powers and barnes. (Although delivery is extra.)

  7. Kathy says:

I’ve been mattress shopping for some time now and made my purchase last night at Denver Mattress.

Jim the salesguy was great. He wasn’t pushy at all and did not try to make me buy the most expensive mattress. His concern was that the bed was right for me.

My mattress will be delivered on Saturday. I can’t wait!!

  8. Brenda says:

We purchased two mattresses (a twin and a queen) from Denver Mattress company about five years ago and were pleased with the price and service, and we’ve been very impressed by the quality and comfort of the mattresses.

  9. Julie says:

Thank you everyone so much, I have a few ideas about where I will be looking now!!!

  10. Erin says:

Mattress Firm has good quality mattresses for a good price especially when they have sales (which is often). They offer military discount too.

  11. Heather M. says:

We had a good experience at American Furniture Warehouse. Nice salesmen and sold us one of the lower priced but comfortable mattresses.

  12. Rebekah says:

If she has a Sam’s card, they sell Sealy posturpedic mattresses there for a good price. We have bought our twin mattresses from there.

  13. We got ours from Mattress Firm as well. When I price compared, I wasn’t really that impressed with Goodwill’s prices. We ended up getting a really good deal with delivery and everything. And the salespeople weren’t pushy – we walked in and told them we wanted the cheapest mattress they had (we needed one in a pinch!) and that’s what we got!

Ummm … I am looking to find a mattress for my 16-yr-old, charming and beautiful daughter who also has a weight problem. She is an “apple” shape and carries most of her weight in her tummy, and over-sized chest; she has also been attending physical therapy for exceptionally tight ligaments and related back pain. Her previous mattresses have all come from Goodwill, but I would like to get her something a little higher quality that might help with her pain. Unfortunately (as usual), I don’t have a lot to spend. Any suggestions as to where to look, or what kind of mattress might suit her…? THANKS!!

    • Mary says:

I don’t have specifics, but I am pear shaped and a lot of beds don’t cut it for my larger hips! I will say – stay AWAY from Tempurpedic for people like me. Because it’s stiffer, the upper body feels fine, but it really holds up TOO well to allow my rear end or hips to sink in and I slept out of alignment.

When my husband and I got married, he had a latex bed. It’s a bed with no springs, but rather layers of latex material with a pillow top. We did Tempurpedic after I had my last baby and had split my pelvic bone because I needed to be comfortable. About 6 months later, I was back to the latex bed.

Whatever you do, I recommend you don’t go cheap to save some money. If she’s having physical issues now, a bad bed, can really aggravate anything else she has going on. The right bed can help her physical therapy. You might want to ask her PT if they have a recommendation. I’d at the very least have something with a pillow top to have extra cushion for the bigger areas without putting strain on her legs from being crooked.

I’ve gotten all of our mattresses at The Mattress World Outlet on S. Nevada & Southgate. When we were looking for a twin mattress this past summer we were able to find a nicer one that cost less than what was offered at Good Will. What’s nice about the outlet is that they have imperfect mattresses that are substantially discounted as well as what is stocked in the other locations around town. Most of the imperfections are things like the stitching was done in the wrong color, or the design stitched into the pillow top is not to speck. I absolutely LOVE my “imperfect” set that was purchased 4 yrs ago now (which also came with a 20 year warranty!) They also accept coupons and put out their own coupons in one of the local ad magazines a few times a year.

  16. Liz says:

Yesterdays flyer that came with ads had I think Mattress Firm (May have been Mattress World) advertising twin mattresses for $77. Since out kids are young (and potty training), we tend to buy cheap mattresses for the first few years. We’ll upgrade as they get older. However, my hubby & I bought our current mattress set 5 years ago from Denver Mattress & couldn’t be happier. I have a bad back & used to “roll” off the bed onto my knees before getting up each morning. My back pain is greatly diminished now. I believe ours came with a 15 year warranty on it.

I’m interested in this discussion – what I haven’t heard much of is actual prices. I need to buy a twin mattress and boxspring for my almost-teen son. He has slept on a cheaper older mattress and now that he’s growing faster, and will no doubt continue over the next several years, I want to get something that will be comfortable for an adult. Can anyone tell me the price range to expect before I start shopping?

  18. NATALIE says:

Mattress Firm was the cheapest when we went shopping. I do have a complaint though. They didn’t have any in stock and it took 3 weeks to get it and the night before delivery they called and said there was a mix up and it would be another month. We had company coming into town and so they gave us a loaner mattress. Then the next month there was another mix up and they gave our mattress away and it would be another month. Then when they came to pick up the mattress I had spilled some of my soda on it and they wouldn’t take it. Said we couldn’t have the mattress we ordered the first time because of the stain. I got the stain out easily and after much arguing we got our mattress 2 more weeks later.

  19. Christina says:

Our sons mattress was 77.$ at Matress Firm. I am a heavier gal but with the matress we have now I don’t have any pain. But it is more expensive for the tempurpedic. What you may want to do is get a pillow top or egg shell top to go over her mattress that may help as well. I was also a apple girl (i love the way you put that) when I was younger and I was very active but it was not until I was 20 I got tired of it and I went to an endocrinologist I had a little bump on my pituitary gland that was causing my apple shape and it was throwing off my hypothalimus which works together with the pituitary and your thyroid. After some test and meds all better but it took years to get off the stomach now after 3 kids well. :) Good Luck with this and i hope she gets better with her ligaments as well which can also be a sign of those 3 glands having issues.
    Loved this discussion!

We just bought a full mattress for my son at Mattress Firm for under $100. After our $20 repeat customer discount, it was $80. This was definitely the bottom of the line mattress (and no box spring–loft bed) but he doesn’t care. We also bought our “generic” memory foam mattress there a couple years ago and love it–the sales person was nice and not pushy, and had great customer service for us. It was also cheaper than anyplace else for an equivalent (or better) mattress.

  21. Wendy says:

We recently bought a queen Sealy Posturpedic mattress from Mattress Firm. Only b/c they price matched w/ American Furniture Warehouse. AFW had the best prices in town for the mattress we were looking at. They are almost 1/2 off Mattress Firm’s reg. prices. Mattress Firm price matched for us, and we got their extended warranty, long exchange period, and they took our old mattress for no charge. We paid around $700 for the mattress and box springs, which was still $300 less that the Mattress Firm’s sale and coupon.

  22. Lisa says:

We bought a mattress from Mattress Firm about 5 years ago and we have not been happy with it at all. Within the first 6 months, it was already concaved where my husband and I sleep. We are not heavy people. You can even see the indents with the comforter on it. It was very expensive. When we complained about the concave they said that they could send someone out but if it wasn’t concave to a certain # of inches then they wouldn’t replace it and we would have to pay for the service call.

Before we had bought that one we got one from Goodwill and it has been the best mattress we have ever owned. They are brand new, inexpensive and very comfortable. We are going back soon to replace ours.

    Good luck
