It’s farmers market season!

We have to wait a bit later than much of the country to harvest our gardens, but that time is almost here!  Here’s some local farmers markets that will be opening soon.  I would highly encourage you to double check the opening dates, times, and locations for these markets.  I know from experience that farmers’ markets seem to come and go and the listings you find online aren’t always accurate, unfortunately.

Which markets are your favorites?  Any particular ones that have a better selection of a certain type of product?

There is also a Farmer’s Market every Tuesday afternoon in Fountain from 3:00pm-7:00pm in front of City Hall.

There is also an indoor farmer’s Market in Security. It’s the Consolidated Marketplace. It’s located on Bradley Road. http://consolidatedmarketplacellc.vpweb.com/

Venitucci has one as well….Starting in Mid-June the Farm stand is OPEN
Saturdays 10:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Through October (Days and hours will expand throughout the Season as more produce is harvested.)

I go sometimes to the Farm and Art Market on Colorado Ave., Wednesdays. Parking can be a bit of a hassle, but we make it a date with the music and the fountain… Also, I went after work around 5:30 and I don’t remember seeing many tomatoes–maybe they all sold out by that time? I got some deals on pickling cucumbers once. I find my CSA shares to be more convenient now, with a 2 year old…

Thanks for the listing…I’ve been hounding the city website and there was still no update yesterday, so Im curious where you finally got the dates?

When we were in Green Mtn Falls, the Woodland Park one was super, and we will be making treks up there again since they have small, local organic growers and a super mushroom grower who comes all the way from Guffey!! Its also more down-home feel, less commercial, which I associate with what farmer’s markets are sposed to be about: building community.

Otherwise, the Old Colorado City Market is ok. There are 2 local growers (meaning, not the huge trucks who have labeled fruit & veggies all the way from Mexico and CA!).
The local growers also grow without chemicals, but you have to specifically ask. The USDA makes it too expensive for them to get certified organic.

At America the Beautiful last year, both times there were maybe 2 vegetable vendors, but both were organic.

JUST FYI, for those who are interested, CNN is doing a big special investigation June 2nd & 3rd on the rampant use of pesticides & chemicals in our food. Here is a link: http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/06/01/dirty.dozen.produce.pesticide/index.html
For those interested, here is a list of the Dirty Dozen – TOP in concentrations of pesticides that cause ADD, cancer, and auto-immune illness:
Celery, Peaches, Strawberries, Apples, Domestic blueberries, Nectarines, Sweet bell peppers, Spinach, kale and collard greens, Cherries, Potatoes, Imported grapes, Lettuce

Was so disappointed at Safeway yesterday – I couldnt get to Vitamin Cottage for organic veggies, and went there…prices ridiculous and quality so poor compared to Vitamin Cottage.

The site I linked to had a few dates, and I confirmed a few others on the individual market’s site (the “more info” links point to their sites *if* there is one).

Great input! I’ve heard from friends that the one in WP is great.

  4. Kathy says:

Today’s gazette (June 2) has a pretty complete listing with hours/days, etc. in the Food section…

  5. Jeff says:

There’s also a small farmer’s market, intermittently (don’t know the days) at the Mining Museum on Northgate Road, usually from around noon to five from what I’ve seen when I drive past on working days.

  6. Mick says:

We rode down to the Bancroft Park Farmer’s Market (24th & Colorado) yesterday (6/5) and there was no market. The advertised start date is 6/5 so WTF?? Hopefully this market will get kicked off for the season next weekend. Hope so, anyway.
