How to find a surcharge-free ATM

Erika asked this question on Facebook:

Have you ever thought about a post on ATM fees in the Springs? We don’t bank locally and I would love to know where I can go and not pay an arm and a leg to take out our money!

Just as I was trying to decide if I had the courage to call 100 different credit unions and banks to find out about ATM fees, Michelle posted this link to Ent’s blog with information on how to find surcharge-free ATMs across the country!

The CO-OP network is a credit union only network of over 28,000 ATMs nationwide. If your bank or credit union is part of the CO-OP network – our current sponsor, Ent Federal Credit Union is! – you can use any CO-OP ATM free of surcharges.

There are 25 participating ATMs in Colorado Springs – go here to find one.  I think it’s pretty cool that Ent is Springs Bargains’ current sponsor and is part of this network!

Love it when you guys help each other out! Thanks so much for the info, Michelle.

Also if you are going grocery shopping, you can use your card as “debit” and request cash back and there is no surcharge (except Dollar Tree, I asked and they charge $1).

For the longest time I could withdraw money at all 7-11′s without an ATM charge, for years – all until a few months ago and I didn’t know why. It looks like they switched over to the CO-OP so now I have to pay fees at all 7-11′s. Besdies this CO-OP, are there any other ATMs in town that are low fee or no fee?

I recently found out that if you bank at 1st Bank and you use a non-1st Bank ATM they charge you $2 on top of the ATM charge. It cost us $4 to pull our money. If you can’t find an ATM that doesn’t charge, you can always write a check to KS for cash or write it over the amount of your groceries. I know checks are old school but you don’t have to worry about extra charges. Plus you can write it for an odd amount.

If you are eligible to bank with USAA, they never charge a fee (free nationawide ATM use!!) and they refund up to $15???/month of the fees the other banks charge to use their ATMS. Additionally, there are no minimum balance requirements on checking and bill pay is free too.

Thanks for the ATM tip for ENT. We traveled to New York this weekend and were able to find plenty of ATMs in the COOP network. They were in the MdDonalds here.
