Reader Request: a good hair stylist in Colorado Springs

Image from Lencioni on Flickr

Springs Bargains reader Erin would like your suggestions on a hair stylist in Colorado Springs!  She’s particularly looking for someone on the east side of town, but said she’ll travel if they’re good!

If you’ve got a hair stylist that you just love, please leave a comment!  Since it’s often hard to find them on Google, please leave a phone number or salon name if you can, and feel free to say what it is you like about them – are they good with specific types of hair?  Inexpensive?  A great colorist?

  1. Paul Mitchell school downtown.. Particular… my son who is working to become a stylist. He loves what he is doing. I have had my hair highlighted, cut and today I am going to get a perm. He is very good! His name is Bryan Polk.. make an appointment. Also, their services are over half price off regular salons. I had my hair highlighted for $30, a cut is $10 and a perm I believe is also $30 or $35.

I have had other student salons do my hair before and was not impressed.

  2. Cathy Kusman – 599-8812 She does an awesome job cutting, coloring, whatever you need. Inexpensive. Has a salon at her house.

  3. Audrey Cassibry says:

I know this scares the pants off of some people but I have been going to the Salon Professional Academy at Austin Bluffs and Barnes (next door to ARC) for over two years. I think I have had 6 student-stylists cut my hair and most of them have done highlights too. I have a very short complicated hairstyle and consider myself pretty picky about it. I get it cut every 4 weeks without fail. I have been more than pleased with every stylist, getting better cuts than from the many “professionals” I’ve gone to over the years. I have people stop me quite often to ask who does my hair.

I have found that the students work very hard and are very dedicated to giving you the best service. They want to do a good job as they are graded on their work. They spend lots of time listening to what you want, making suggestions, and then they run it all by their educator who also weighs in on the cut or color. The educators are always nearby and very willing to answer questions.

While some of the students are “artsy”-looking with tattoos and wild-colored hair and such, they all seem to behave professionally. I am a people watcher while I am there and have not seen anything that I consider unprofessional.

The thing I enjoy most is the scalp massage during the wash. That is worth the trip every time!

And the price is great too! $10-13 for a wash, cut, and style. My highlights have ranged from $15 for a few foils up to $35 for more foils, two colors and a toner. They have a referral program where you get $5 off your next service if you give your stylist’s card to someone and they come in for service. I got a $7 haircut yesterday! My current stylist is named Timka, a sweet and really cute young lady from Finland. When she graduates she may recommend someone else or I’ll just go “potluck”. I’ve never been disappointed.

Be brave! Give it a try! 719-266-9400.

  4. I’ve been using Brianna at the JcPenny Salon (off of Powers and N. Carefree) for about a 1 1/2 years. I heard about her through several people from work. I get a cut and highlights (both blonde and red) and spend roughly $90. I get SO many compliants on my hair!!!! She’s great!!!

  5. I have naturally curly hair and have always struggled to find a stylist who knew how to cut and properly care for curly hair. Luckily one day, I stumbled across a review online for Nicole Lingerich. Her business is called Spiral Evolution and she is located in the Phoenix Suites on Acadamy and Vickers. She has been a such a blessing – she dry cuts my hair so that we can actually see what the curls are doing as they are cut – she is absolutely amazing. She has great insight on the proper products to use for curly hair as well.

    • Carrie Isaac says:

Missy, I’m not the requestor, but I SO appreciate this! I cut my own hair because the two or thee professional haircuts I have ever had were dreadful. Most stylists simply don’t know what to do with curly hair, and I can cut it better myself. But, I would really like to have someone else cut it and can probably find room in the budget to afford someone decent.

Anyway, I will check her out sometime. Thanks for the rec!

      • Sure! Her # is 719-229-2154. The great thing about getting a great cut w/ curly hair is that I only have to go about every 3 months – love that! And she has a “referal” program – yay!

        • Got my hair cut by Nicole at Spiral Evolution this weekend, she is awesome. Thank you Missy for the suggestion.

          • I got my hair cut by Nicole at Spiral Evolution last week and was so impressed! I have never been able to wear my thick, curly hair down, until now! Nicole is so knowledgeable about the do’s and dont’s with curly hair and the dry cut left me with an amazingly easy style that looks great and that I have actually been able to duplicate my self. Thanks so much Missy!

    • Missy, what does Nicole charge? I might be interested. Thanks!

      • TW, I went to Nicole in January of this year and she charged $50 for shampoo and a cut. I asked her on the phone when I called for an appt what the charge was, so you could always double check if you call her, since it’s been a while since I saw her. I’m the same Sharon who went to her after Missy’s recommendation. Nicole did a fantastic job on my unruly hair!

  6. Kristan, who runs a booth at the Phenix suites off of Briargate boulevard & Academy. Me and my wife both see her. My wife is very conservative with her cuts and color, and has always come away happy, even when she decides to change things up. Also, one of my co-workers sees her. She’s not afraid of color at all, and has very edgy tastes. Also very happy with Kristan.

  7. I go to Sherrill at Sherrill Shears. Located at S.Carefree and Murray. 5975027.
I love this place! Linda is also great! Also in the shop is Affordable Massage, With Kathy Kelly and Carmen Govier. 5732538. Prices are good. Atmosphere is Great! They cater to your needs. Give them a call.!

  8. I just wanted to say that there’s some great information in the postings that can be paired up with gift cerficates from the radio shopping show. You can find them at 1300am or at rss-cs.com . I went to the Paul Mitchel school for my haircut and color/hightlight and although the service for the cut was less than desirable, the 3 services only cost me $10. The first cut took 4 hours and I went back the next day to get it fixed. I would like to say that I had been going to the Toni & Guy School in security for years and only chose the Paul Mitchel school out of convenience. If you go to the Paul Mitchel school, make sure you request a white shirt – these are the people who have been in school the longest and are at the top of the class.

    • Carmen, You should go to my son, he is not a white shirt yet but does the white shirt sessions on Wed. He is very good.. I do agree that some schools take for ever and was very nervous about going to Paul Mitchell, but if you go on a recommendation I believe you would be very surprised. His name is Bryan if you want to give him a try. I am his mother but he does an outstanding job. Even my husband says that my son has given me the best cut out of our the “professional” people I have gone too!

  9. I also use a student salon: TGI Academy in Security. 719-390-9898

I drive 45 minutes to get there and it’s absolutely worth it. Cuts are $12 and the students take their time and do a great job.

  10. @lalanmeli says:

Cara @ the wyld hair where cuts are only 15 dollars!!!! Tell her carla sent you!

  11. I highly recommend Debbie at Retouch Salon in OCC. (15th and Colorado Ave) She does a great job educating you about your hair, face shape, etc and will give you a cut that will look good on YOU! If you really have no idea what to do with your hair and need some good professional advice, she’s amazing!

  12. Mindy Austin says:

RON HOFER, @ salon ron de vu. 719-535-2600. (briargate) I have beeng getting my haircut with him for years. I used to leave other salons hating my hair for a few days, but never with Ron. I’ve always loved what he does, and get lots of compliments. Over the years I’ve gotten more brave and let him do whatever because I always like it Highly recommended….. I get washed, cut and styled for $30.

  13. Betsy Meier says:

I’ve been going to LaRaine Shaffer at Harmony In Hair for 8 years. She’s really excellent in all aspects of hair care. They are on North Carefree & Powers and the number is 597-1770.

  14. I highly recommend Chara at Cost Cutters on the corner of powers and woodmen. When we first moved here a few years ago, I tried most of the expensive high end salons with disappointing results. Chara is one of those rare finds. And best of all, it’s only $15 for cut and style and around $45 for color.

  15. I love my stylist Emily at Salon Seven. The shop is off Tejon south of Cimmaron. I have naturally curly hair and I get my hair colored and I absolutely LOVE Emily. She has naturally curly hair so she really understands how our hair works! But I also know she is great with all hair types. Plus she is such a sweet gal! I have been going to her for the past year and she does an excellent job. She is worth every penny b/c I never have to worry about getting a bad cut or color! Salon Seven’s # 632-7774.

  16. Debbie Jackson at the JCPenny salon at the Citadel. 597-1110. She has been cutting my hair since I was 12 (I won’t say hoy many decades ago that was; she was just out of school :) . She cuts my whole family’s hair. My sister still make an appointment every time she is in town.

  17. I went to the Lady Godiva Hair Studio Downtown 2 weeks ago and am thrilled with my hair. I recieved compliments from complete strangers. I tried them out when the groupon came out for them. I got a great deal. I had the PM Shine done on my hair with color with was included. I had Dan as my stylist. I told him I needed something that would look good if I did not have much time to do anything with it. I had a drastic cut done. I had about 5 or 6 inches chopped of. Went from a blunt cut to a kind of bob. But the cut is so easy to manage and Dan knew exactly what I was looking for. I must also mention that the scalp massage during the shampoo was worth the money all by itself. They don’t just rub around the shampoo and rinse her did an extensive purposeful massage and I was in heaven;) It is exactly what I was looking for. Also if any of you try him out be sure to tell him you were referred by Loreita Holladay. References earn me a free cut:) Their number is 475-2266
I know that if you get the whole works you can get that for $100. That is shampoo, cut, Color, Highlights, and Blow Dry and style. They are very eager to please their. Great customer service!!

  18. A huge ditto for Debby at Retouch Salon in Old Colorado City! I have only had awesome experiences there and I have several friends who go there, too! She’s very personable and friendly and won’t hesitate to tell you if she thinks a cut is wrong/right for your face shape!

Just posting a link to the responses that were posted on Facebook when this post went up – more great suggestions here: http://www.facebook.com/SpringsBargains?v=wall&story_fbid=143566772355286&ref=mf

  20. Carmen at Phoenix Salon at Academy/Vickers. She first cut my hair 10 years ago when she was at Veda and had the highest level of training there. I have followed her everywhere she has moved after that because she is so good! Now all my kids go to her… teens and college kids… both girls and guys. They love how she listens to them, looks at pics they bring in, is willing to try all sorts of styles, colors, etc. My 17 year old son pays $20 including tip. I have my hair cut, full color for greys, washed and blow dried/styled for around $90 including tip. That is really low for this level of attention and expertise. She works Wed-Sat. Phone number is 591-5554 or 271-8099

  21. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE CARA- HAIRSTYLIST RELOCATED (USED TO WORK AT WYLD HAIR)? PLEASE ANY INFORMATON I CAN GET WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

  22. Hi you all, still looking for Cara?! :( Thanks!

    • I think if you call where she worked and ask what place she moved to to cut hair, they have to tell you if they know. Typically when a stylist moves, they will let their customers know. If the old place of employment won’t tell you, but still has contact info, they might pass your info on to her, but I wouldn’t count on it. I’m sure they can’t give it out to you, but that may be your best chance.

      • Thanks for your reply Julie, I have tried that but the owner is adamant about not giving her contact information out as she doesn’t want to loose customers. Well my boyfriend had been going there for the last 11 years and took his 5 kids as well so not did she loose me but 6 others :(. Not a very good thing for her because, I have other people that have not returned there for the same reason.

        • Stephanie Stretch says:

Hey Maria, here is Cara’s information:
She is working at A Zen Salon (Union and Vickers) and her number is 217-8177. I had to find her on Facebook. Hope you get this.
          Steph

  23. I took the three peoples advice who went to Debby at Retouch Salon. I can honestly say I recieved the best hair cut and color I have ever gotten there. Debby is fantastic, but I’m sure that all the other stylists are equally good. I recommend them whole heartedly. They are also extremely well priced. I got my hair cut and completely colored, she had to fix a botch job from the last salon I went to, and I have long hair and it cost be less than 100 dollars. I was expecting to pay well over that amount for everything she did. I was beyond pleasantly surprised. As long as we live here I will never go to another salon, they are by far the best.

  24. I too am looking for a local person to cut CURLY hair. Not just anyone does a good job on curly hair. There is an art to knowing how the hair lies and how to cut it on the wave(always cut dry). For any of you out there in the same boat–a little advice that helped me alot. Take the time to invest in yourself and go to the Library and check out (or buy) the book Curly Girl. It has lots of how to’s. It is written by a famous New York Stylist, Lorraine Massey, who does nothing but curly hair (men, women and children). She has her own product line called Deva (sold at ULTA for $20 each per bottle of shampoo, conditioner and gel) and certifies stylists in her curly hair methodology. While I was hoping there was a Deva Certified Stylist in the Springs, there is one in Denver (name unknown). I have been told the Denver Salon is pricey, but by the time you leave the salon, you have a total understanding of your curly, frizzy hair and learn how to care for it properly, plus get a great hair cut. After reading the book FIRST then buying Deva products, I was amazed after 2 weeks following their methodology, how soft and manageable my hair became and my hair was left au naturale for the first time in my life! I could not believe it, but it actually looked good. Given time and the right products it looks good now so I now hope to get the right person to cut it to look great! I will look into the Spiral Evolution Salon or spend the bucks and go to Denver.

  25. If you want a great cut for curly hair (that you can wear curly or straight) you should go to Ivan at Salon Ivan. He has been a stylist for over 20 years and has had training with many top stylists in the world. He cuts your hair the way you wear it. Each hair cut is specific to each person and hair type. You wont be disapointed.
