Sarah wants some advice on selling baby and children’s clothing:
I was wondering if you know the best way to sell baby/children’s clothes? More specifically where I can get the most for them?
Is it a consignment shop, selling on ebay or craigslist, or something like a Just Between Friends sale? My daughter is growing like a weed and it’s time for a new wardrobe but sure would like to get the most I can for the old one.
I’m not sure of “the” answer, but here’s a few posts that should prove helpful depending on which route you choose:
And, a lot of readers had good things to say about selling at the Recess Consignment store, and there’s also ThredUp, which might be a way to trade clothing instead of selling.
Do any of you have any tips on the best strategies for selling used kids’ clothing? Please share by leaving a comment on this post!
By the way, if you know of any consignment sales coming up, I’d love to hear about them for potential posting and adding to the calendar! Please contact me with comprehensive info about the sale.

For everyday clothes, we made some great cash at Just Between Friends – probably double what we would have made if I would have taken them to local consignment stores. For designer/boutique clothes, I use ebay.
The next Mommy & Me sale is coming up in April – plenty of time to start organizing now and make some Spring cash!
I highly recommend the Just Between Friends (JBF) sale. They only happen twice a year, but it is worth storing my kids’ clothes! I have tried Craigslist- unless you want to sell each outfit individually you won’t make nearly as much money as JBF. I personally don’t like eBay because I don’t want to deal with the hassle of mailing my clothes. I like doing it all at once at the JBF sale- this last time I made $400-and I mainly only sold clothes for my two kids! I am a pretty savvy shopper and I sold some of my Gymboree items for more than I paid for them. JBF takes 35% of your sales, but I mark mine so much higher than I would for Craigslist! For example: I sold Children’s Place Halloween costumes for $15-$18- they only retail for about $25. I took home almost $12 for the one- I couldn’t sell it at my yardsale for $7! I have a friend who has had a lot of success with Craigslist, but that is mostly baby clothes. Those sizes seem to do well there. But personally, I love the only having to deal with them twice a year and then about 10 days later I get a big fat check in the mail! I have done it 5 times and I am already setting things aside for the sale in April.
I have always used Children’s Orchard (North Carefree & Academy Blvd). To be honest, I do not know how they compare to other consignment/used clothes places; I started using them because of convenience but I like that they buy the stuff outright. I work and take care of my Grandmother and I don’t have a ton of time to spend selling my daughter’s old clothes. I always shop there for her too and am always able to do fairly well. I stopped in last week to look for summer stuff for our spring break vacation and got 3 pair of shorts, 1 pair of Gymboree cord pants (for next fall), 1 pair of Children’s Place jeans (for next fall) 2 short sleeved shirts and a Disney Tinker Bell bomber jacket (for next fall). The total was $43 but I had a $26 store credit from what I sold last fall and so I spent $17 out of pocket.
Recess children’s consignment is a great place. The owner is a mom and careful to sell clothes that are in really good shape and cute. I go there whenever I need something nice, but don’t want to spend a lot.
I tried to sell clothes at Children’s Orchard once and I was very disappointed. I liked the fact that they would just pay cash for my clothes outright, but I felt like they didn’t give me all the information up front. They are not very close to me, so I was disappointed when I dropped off my clothes and they told me I had to come back the next day to find out what they would pay me. I assumed they would call me, and I was kind of annoyed that they didn’t tell me the whole procedure up front. Then when I came back to find out how much they would pay me, they only took a couple of things and paid me next to nothing for them. I would much prefer to donate my clothes to someplace that could use them, like Life Network (the local crisis pregnancy center) than go through all that hassle again.
I like buying clothes from Childrens Orchard, but I will not be selling my clothes to them again.
Once upon a Child off Woodman is a great place, they buy the clothes right out though instead of consigning them. Sometimes it takes them a few hours to get through your clothing though so its best to be there when they open at 9:00 because its first come first serve.
Hi,
I started the Mini Mania Kids Consignment Sale in 2011 and it is so worth it to consign! You make at least 70% off of your sales, if you volunteer at least 4 hours you even get 75%.
We do have moms, who do this as a “job”. They sell with us to be able to stay at home with their kids and they really make good money (our top consignors checks range from 1100 to 2200 dollars).
So come meet us, be a part of Mini Mania. Our Fall/Winter Sale will be September 13th – 15th. Have a great summer!
