Where to donate personal care items?

Julie emailed in with this request just before New Year’s, and unfortunately I never got it posted in time for year-end donations.  But, it’s going to be good info to have any time of year.

Julie wanted to know where she could donate things like lotions or bath salts.  Are there women’s shelters that would accept a donation like this?  If you know of one, please comment!

I have donated these kinds of items to Partners in Housing before. They seem to appreciate them.

  2. CHURCHES (often support various ministries) can use non-perishable items & toiletries
HOMELESS/ WOMEN’S SHELTERS can use toiletries (even sample sizes are great to donate)
FOOD BANK/ FOOD PANTRIES gladly accept non-perishable food (avoid glass containers)
ANIMAL SHELTERS can use pet food & supplies, pet coupons, and even old towels

The colleges, I know Pikes Peak has a student pantry for students to come and pick up food and toiletry items at no cost to the student. I think that is a great idea!

Silver Key Senior Services (2250 Bott Avenue, on the West Side of town) collects personal care items for their seniors in need. They’re a great organization (I used to work there!)

I highly recommend donating these items to Liza’s Place here in Colorado Springs (www.gospel-home-cs.org). I have also been very impressed with Northern Churches Care (northernchurchescare.org).

Our church takes a van load of personal hygeine items to Mexico each Spring Break. They are left at churches where they are dispersed to needy families. If you have a heart for Mexico, you can contact me for more information.

You can donate to the Ronald McDonald House @311 Logan St. accross the new Children’s hospital. They also used these at the family rooms at the Children’s Hospital & at the new St Francis -penrose hospital.

Also “One Nation Walking Together” located on Commerce St . just off of N. Nevada St, near the old K-Mart. They take items to the reservations in 4 or 5 surrounding states.

Hope and Home! They are an agency for FOSTER CARE children in Colorado Springs. They have a “store” where kids coming into the care can “shop” (for free) and pick up items for their new home. A lot of these kids have nothing but the clothes they are wearing. Their website is on the net.

Baby Care Items (shampoo, conditioner, lotion and soap)
    Baby Food and Formula
Baby Items (bottles, sippy cups, pacifiers, toys etc.)
Clothes in both sexes and all sizes (sleepwear, underwear,
    socks, t-shirts)
    Diapers
Hair Care Items (brushes, combs, hair ties, hair spray, gel etc.)
    Hairdryers, Curling irons, Flat irons
    Hooded Infant Towels
    Pull-ups
    School Supplies
Skin and Body Care items for older kids (toothbrushes,
    toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, soap etc.)
    Stuffed Animals
Towel Sets (blue and pink sets of bath, hand and washcloth)
    Baby Wipes
