A question from a reader:
Is there any place to get decent-sized trees for a reasonable price? Is there a particular time of year that they go “on sale”? I’d like something bigger than what Lowe’s sells, but don’t have a big budget.
If you have a tip on where or how to get trees and other landscaping supplies at a good price, please comment on this post!

I’m not sure how big you are looking.. but Sams (south, at Fountain/Academy) has some pretty large (tall) trees for only $14.88. Mainly Oaks, Maples, and Apsens. Very nice and healthy and probably 10-12+ feet high. Much larger and way cheaper than what we’d seen at Home Depot the same day.
We have purchased all our trees & bushes from Colorado Tree Farm & Nursery off Woodmen since 2002. The Heidrich family is fantastic and have owned this farm since 1977. You can check out their web site at coloradotreefarmnursery.com If you are military, they do give a discount. They also have a frequent purchase program. All their stock is grown for Colorado growing conditions. Tree’s usually go on sale in the Fall but then you are at the mercy of what’s left.
I would go with a local nursery–you will pay a bit more, but their knowledge more than makes up for the difference! Many of the trees that “big box” retailers get are NOT suitable for front range growing. You can find trees at various sizes and thus prices at most of our local nurseries. Many also have coupons that come out in the ValPak or CO advertising magazines you get in the mail-I recently saw a 20% off entire purchase. Again, you will pay more, but you’ll also have more luck getting a tree that will survive here! (and most nurseries have an excellent staff who can answer your questions)
I know I’m not answering the question, but what are good trees to to plant here in the Springs?
If you live with in the city limits you can get a voucher for a large streetside tree – the nursery’s have info about it. There was a fund set aside by General Palmer make sure Colorado Springs had tree lined streets.
We’ve used Colorado Tree Farm & Nursery off Woodmen for our larger trees. They have a good guarantee, but all of ours survived– not so with our big box trees.
