What To Make With What’s On Sale: Tilapia Fillets

Tilapia is on sale for $2.77/lb this week at Sunflower Market and $2.66/lb at Albertsons – a great deal, even if it’s gone a bit lower in the past.  At Albertson’s, you’ll be buying three one-pound bags of frozen fillets to get that price; but at Sunflower, you can buy it at the meat counter and get as little or as much as you want.

Here’s some ideas for things to make with tilapia!

This recipe for Broiled Tilapia Parmesan may not be the healthiest thing in the world, but it is very simple and pretty good!  My normal style for many meat recipes is to glance at the ingredients and do it my own way, so I’m not sure I’ve ever followed this recipe exactly.  It really is ready in 15 minutes, which is a big win-win!  Just be sure to use real Parmesan cheese and not the powdered stuff.

Broiled Tilapia with Mustard-Chive Sauce

Ah, here’s another recipe for broiled tilapia that looks simple and delicious: Broiled Tilapia with Mustard-Chive Sauce.  I suppose yogurt is much better for you than the mayo used in the recipe above!

Inspired by a meal my friend Abby once served us, I’ve made potstickers filled with tilapia, and they’re quite good – they really didn’t taste much like fish at all.   The recipe I loosely follow is premium content from Cook’s Illustrated, but here’s a recipe that’s similar.  I’ll be using some of the fresh chives from my garden and making a bunch to freeze!

Baja Fish Tacos with Avocado Cream

Here’s a recipe for fish tacos that would be a good way to use the tilapia that’s on sale this week with all the tortillas you stocked up on during Cinco de Mayo!  Ah, and here’s another one for Baja Fish Tacos with Avocado Cream that sounds even better.

I’ve never thought about slow cooking fish before, but Erin says it works – here’s the $5 Dinner Mom’s recipe for Sweet Balsamic Tilapia.  It cooks for 2-4 hours, so not a “start it before leaving in the morning” type of recipe, but still a “start it during naptime” recipe!

  2. I’m new to cooking with tilapia -with summer around the corner we use our grill alot. Any good recipe and grilling instructions?

    • I’d love to hear anyone’s suggestions! I kind of feel like tilapia is a little bit too fragile to grill (it seems like it would fall apart), but maybe I need to learn a new technique!

  3. We love to grill our tilapia. We make little foil pouches, place the fish inside w/ some butter, and lemon juice and seasonings. Doesn’t take long to cook on the grill either. It’s delicious! Just make sure to either put butter or pan on the foil so the fish doesn’t stick.

  4. We like to grill our tilapia on foil with the sides folded up to make a tray of sorts, sprayed with cooking spray and seasoned with salt and pepper. Our favorite way to serve it is on a toasted bun topped with coleslaw. It is soooooo yummy. Man, I am hungry now.lol.
