Reader Request: Renting A Dumpster

A request from Valerie:

We are looking to rent a dumpster for a big landscaping project – and were horrified by the cost! Has anyone either rented a dumpster and found an affordable one – or taken a trailer load of trash to the dump and can tell me how much that costs and how it works?

If you can help Valerie out, please leave a comment on this post!

  1. Dumpster rental is outrageous, Waste Management has this new bag you can buy they come in various sizes you fill it up and they come and pick it up for you. A friend of mine used one for a basement demo and she was pleased with it. You can find the info on their website. I know the dump is pretty pricey but you can dump yard waste at Don’s Garden Center on 24/Powers.

  2. I was looking up prices yesterday but never found a good deal.

  3. I’ve priced it out as well a couple times for my husband’s work and always been very appalled at the prices.
The dump varies on the type of load – truck or trailer, covered or not, etc. Plus it’s a good 30 minute, maybe 45 minute drive out there to take into consideration.

Maybe ask around some friends or neighbors – could you get a couple families to split the cost and fill it up? Anyone else doing some remodeling in your area you could ask if they have extra room in their dumpster?

What Erin was mentioning is called the Bagster by Waste Management http://www.thebagster.com/

You buy the bag at a home improvement/hardware store such as Lowe’s or Home Depot and then fill it up and call for them to pick it up when done. My neighbor used one and said it worked pretty well. I think he paid $80-100 each bag to buy and then have hauled away.

    • When we checked into this option we thought it would be great!! That was until WM told us that you purchase the bag fill it and then PAY them for the removal fee. I naturally assumed that the cost at Lowe’s for for removal and everything……but somethings are truly too good to be true.

Rocky Top Resources will take branches, leaves, pine needles and grass for free for a canned good donation. They give the canned goods to Care and Share. http://www.rockytopresources.com/

      • Yes. Rocky Topis great–we do that regularly, but the free lawn dump is only on Saturdays. (They are still pretty cheap during the week)

We did a major/major landscape mitagation due to damages and had a ton of debris. We shopped and shopped and discovered the Waste management Bagster deal was the best fit for us. We ended up needing three of the Bags (you buy them at home depot or lowes). If you call Waste Management they may send you a $5 coupon on the pickup. If you have all the bags picked up at once, they charge a certain price for the first and lower for the subsequent ones. It will still a much much lesser price than renting an entire dumpster, you will be surprised what will fit in the Bagster… 3,300 lbs. per bag.

Check Costco or Sam’s Club because I did see those Bagsters at one of those stores too. Which I could remember the cost but just saw it last week and thought what a neat idea. On the dumpsters, they won’t park them in the street either. Has to go in yard or driveway. They aren’t responsible for cracking the driveway either.

  7. My husband just took a HUGE truck load out to the dump and paid $35. You need to remember to put a tarp over everything or they will charge you extra.

  8. We used the Bagster for a bathroom remodel. It worked well for our needs and was way cheaper then renting even the smallest dumpster. We filled that thing up with tile, shower doors, cement, and old drywall. It worked great!

  9. We have rented a dumpster for yard waste (and bathroom remodeling waste and…) from L & L Disposal a few times–they’re the cheapest around, and it’s always the same nice guy who comes and picks up and drops off. We’ve been happy with them.
