Reader Request: Where To Find Pastured Eggs

Lexee writes:

I would love to find a place I can buy pastured eggs, possibly from someone/some place local that raises the chickens themselves. Any ideas on this?

It would be even greater to find a place where the chickens are fed organic feed and are truly free-range – having lots of outdoor access.

  1. I have seen some at Ranch Foods Direct, and I think they’re around $5 a dozen.

  2. My friend Kelly’s Farm here in Black Forest has exactly what you are looking for!

  3. It’s really hard to find strictly pastured eggs here because it’s so dry. I found that in my extensive search before. However, I use Lil’ Bit Farms. They are a small farm that does do some supplementing with grain, but it’s organic. I was allowed to tour the farm and see exactly how the chickens live a happy healthy life. They also do delivery! Here is their number 719 966 7465. They are such great people :)

    Natural Grocers sells some.

  5. Try Craigslist, search eggs, you should be able to find local producers.

  6. I’ve seen some listed on Craigslist.

Go on Craigslist, the farm section people post eggs there. They will drop of a meeting places or allow pickups at the farm. If you want most will let you visit the farm. Egg production is low this time of year and should pick up in a few months. The amount of sun makes a difference. They tend to be $2.50- $5 depending on what kind.

  8. I’d suggest craigslist too – my hens are on pasture and sprouted grains (because really, look outside right now – there is just nothing for them this time of year), but I’m perpetually sold out and not taking on new customers.

  9. I’ve bought them accidentally at the commissary at the Academy before. They were pretty cheap too and I am pretty sure it said they were organic.

I think many of you are confusing free-range eggs (from chickens that are allowed to run in a pasture) with pasteurized eggs which is a heat treatment like pasteurizing milk. It kills any salmonella in the egg and makes them safe for using raw in mayonnaise, frostings, ice cream, etc.
