Reader Request: Used & Reclaimed Building Materials

Emily writes:

My husband and I just bought a house, and we are needing to remodel the kitchen.  We are trying to get this done as frugally as possible. My husband is very handy, so we will be doing all of the work ourselves.

What I’ve been trying to find is very low cost materials. We’d like to do reclaimed wood floors and counter tops, and possibly used cabinets. We’re very interested in old barn wood and other reclaimed products. I’ve been checking Craigslist for old wood, used flooring and cabinets, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any great resources in the Springs area for these things?

Do you know of places to find used or reclaimed building materials in Colorado Springs?  Please share your tips by leaving a comment!

  1. You may want to check Habitat for Humanity Restore on Wahsatch, they have a constant rotation of stuff.

  2. If you do find that you need to buy some things new, go to King Soopers and pick up a Lowe’s giftcard for around the amount you’ll spend, then use it when you get your stuff. You’ll get 4x the fuel points for buying it. Even $50 will still get you 200 fuel points; that’s $0.20 off/gallon

    • We do this! But, they don’t do 4x fuel points all the time – just on certain occasions. It’s going on through today (Tuesday the 19th)!

I echo the Habitat for Humanity Restore. And there are tons of blogs on the web that can give you creative ideas for reusing things you find.

  4. Also, there is at least one architectural salvage place in the Springs. If you google it you should be able to find it. And yes the REstore for Habitat is wonderful!

The Re store is awesome and has cheep prices, you might also want to check out Craigslist- also if your looking for something in particular you might want to post it in the wanted add.. good luck!!

  6. Definitely come check us out at the Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity ReStore. We price items 50% – 70% off retail and have both new and used items for sale. You won’t be disappointed.

  7. Habitat for Humanity/Restore used to be good. I still go there often, but have seen their prices jump off the roof, specially cabinets, doors and windows. Lots of junk cheap though!!! Maybe they should easy on the TV commercials and offer more bargains like they used to.
