It’s time for What To Make With What’s On Sale! At Sunflower Market this week, Cascade Fresh Yogurt (32 oz) is $2.00. There are several more yogurt deals too- both King Soopers and Safeway have great sales on individual Greek yogurt cups.
Yogurt makes a good, healthy snack, and it can be used in many other ways as well. Here are some ideas for using yogurt in the kitchen!
- In a blender, combine a cup of yogurt with whatever fruit you have on hand. Add your liquid of choice and blend into a refreshing smoothie!
- Try adding a spoonful of yogurt to milk as a substitute for buttermilk. Stir and let the mixture sit for about ten minutes before using.
- Substitute plain yogurt in recipes calling for sour cream (or if it’s a recipe for something sweet, then sweetened yogurt will work just fine!) You can also use plain yogurt as a topping for baked potatoes, enchiladas, or tacos. Try mixing in some complementary spices, such as paprika or garlic, to make it even tastier!
- Include some plain yogurt in your marinade for steaks or chicken. The acid in yogurt helps to tenderize raw meat.
Here are three recipes that call for yogurt:
Yogurt Chocolate Chip Cookies – These cookies are crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside. The yogurt in the recipe acts as an egg substitute, so these are great for people with egg allergies!
Butter Chicken- This delicious Indian dish includes a cup of plain yogurt in the sauce, which gives it a creamy texture and tangy flavor.
Fresh Asparagus Soup – The recipe author calls this a “creamy asparagus soup accented with yogurt, lemon, and Parmesan cheese.”
How do you like to use yogurt? Do you usually buy it plain or sweetened?

You can strain it to reduce the whey, then flavor it to make a product similar to flavored cream cheese. I’m glad for all the ideas, though I’m planning to buy a gallon of whole milk while is’t on sale and make my own yogurt. :) It’s pretty easy!
Several years ago – before Greek yogurt became SO popular – I remember Cook’s Illustrated suggesting to strain it to make something where thicker Greek yogurt would be preferable. (Maybe tzatziki?) Hadn’t thought of using it as a cream cheese alternative, though. Might have to try that since cream cheese has been so expensive!
