My bread haul at the Orowheat Bread Outlet

Over the weekend, I stopped into the Orowheat Bread Outlet (now the Bimbo Outlet) and man, every time in I’m there, I wonder why on earth I ever buy bread at the grocery store? Granted, sometimes the outlet is out of stock on some times, but check out what I scored for $19 and some change on Saturday:

  • One large loaf of Orowheat sourdough bread
  • Five bags of Thomas bagels (blueberry and “everything”)
  • Two bags of Orowheat 100% whole wheat hot dog buns
  • Two loaves of Orowheat 100% whole wheat bread
  • Two packages of Thomas 100% whole wheat English muffins

That’s an average of $1.58 per item!  The English muffins were free with my punch card (see next paragraph), and expired in a day or two, so I took them home and made some egg sandwiches and stuck them in the freezer.  The rest of the items all had about a week or so left before their sell-by date, so we are eating bagels and french toast for breakfast this week.

The Orowheat bread outlet is now open on Sundays, too, from 9 AM to 3 PM, and like Wednesdays, Sundays are double punch days.

For the uninitiated, you get a little blue punch card that they stamp when you purchase items, and once you’ve completed a card ($40 total in purchases), you get two items off the “free table”.  The “free table” is a large table and shelf next to the checkout that has items that are usually just a day or two from expiring.  Selection varies – everything from tortillas to cinnamon raisin bread.

Plus, when you spend $8 or more, you get to choose one item from the “free table”.  So, not only are the bread prices good, there are several ways to get bonuses, too!

The Orowheat bread outlet in Colorado Springs is located on the southwest corner of Flintridge and Academy.  You can read an older review of the Orowheat store here, and here’s a list of some of the bakery outlets in Colorado Springs.

If you stop in, tell them that you read about them on Springs Bargains!  The ladies that work there are super sweet and helpful and one of them, Becky, is a faithful reader. :)

  1. A while back when I was in the Rainbo/Sara Lee outlet, one of the gentlemen who works there was telling me that Sara Lee bought Orowheat not too long ago and eventually, the bread outlets will each carry some products from the other line, so there may be more variety in the future.

    • Yep, that’s true! I asked Becky about it when I was there over the weekend and she didn’t know when they would start carrying each other’s stuff yet.

  2. Bargain mart has their bread for.50 a loaf. All of the same items you have there. :-)

I go to the outlet in Loveland….I always take my own bags and get a free loaf for that too!!! I really like finding Boboli Shells for quick pizzas, and Mia Tortillas. Last time I went, I got about 18 different items, had two punch cards I was saving and took my own bags….I averaged 96 cents per item. LOVE THEM!!

  4. I work at a Sara Lee outlet store. Sara Lee has been bought out by Bimbo brands, which are quite large and include Orowheat and Sara Lee products among others.
Bread is way cheaper at an outlet than the grocery store, and with all the preservatives it’ll last longer than the expiration date too.
All outlet stores are different, but ours actually orders some bread in fresh and then sells them for cheaper than the grocery. So you can get long-dated items for cheaper than across the street.
That being said, I don’t buy any bread from the outlet, even the healthy brands, because I can’t find any without corn syrup, soybean oil, hydrogenated oils, etc.

  5. I love this outlet. I go once a month (on Wednesday). I buy enough to get us through the month as the bread always freezes so well. I typically fill the unch card in one visit with the double punches. Did their policy change – I am used to a filled punch card giving two free loaves from the back wall. And of course, for every $7 spent, an item from the “free” table!
    Love it!

  6. Bargain Mart is the best for low priced bread. Still fresh and last beyond exp date. I usually buy it for freezing or will make up a large batch of French toast and then freeze. Works great and costs much less that Supermarket bread.

  7. Great place to buy bread and other sweet treats. I highly recommend this store. I go about twice a month and spend enough to get the free item. But I thought it was only $7 to get a free item off the front table, did they change it to $8?

  8. After being in Colorado Springs for 18 some months (military-always moving and having to find things over) I did a search for bread outlet stores and found your previous reviews of the outlets here in the Springs (dated 2010 I believe). I had been trying to find an outlet but never really looked into it, funny that I found it on this cite since I’ve been a member now for about 8 months, guess I wasn’t looking that hard lol
I made it by Orowheat on Saturday morning and came out with two bags filled for $7.00. I really liked the store, and their prices. :)
