I just heard about this cool site via the Well-Trained Mind Message Boards and it looks like a great resource for a little extra practice in real-life, mental math! Bedtime Math emails story/word math problems each evening, with the idea being (I think) that as part of your bedtime routine, you read the problem aloud to your kids and they do it in their head.
It starts out with a brief story or fact (for example, Monday’s was some interesting info about tennis balls and the U.S. Open) and then gives a story problem, or three, actually: one for “wee ones” (roughly preschool-aged), “little kids” (roughly K-2nd grade), and “big kids” (2nd grade+).
You can read more and sign up here. (The problems are also posted in blog format so you wouldn’t necessarily have to subscribe via email).
