What To Make With What’s On Sale: Bologna and Hot Dogs

It’s Friday — time for What To Make With What’s On Sale!  King Soopers’ Buy 10, Save $5 Mega Event combined with the Buy 10, Save $10 Kraft catalina makes for some super deals on Oscar Mayer wieners, turkey franks, and bologna.

Hot dogs and bologna are nice to have in the fridge for days when you need a quick meal.  They’re also an affordable and flavorful addition to lots of recipes.  Here are some ideas for using both bologna and hot dogs!

Have you ever tried a fried bologna sandwich?  I haven’t — we always ate ours cold when I was a kid — but it does sound intriguing…I think!  The Country Cook’s Fried Bologna Sandwich recipe explains how to fry up bologna and make a sandwich with mayo, mustard, and tomatoes, or whatever condiments you prefer.

Here’s another recipe that might sound strange but is actually really tasty: Pickle-In-the-Middle Bologna Appetizers.  They’re always a hit at parties or potlucks!

This Fried Bologna Casserole, made with mashed potatoes, received lots of great reviews.  Several reviewers suggested using double the amount of bologna, so keep that in mind if you try this recipe.

  1. We eat fried bologna sandwiches. They are tasty. My husband puts mustard on his and I just use mayo. :-) Fry a piece of bologna and add a slice of cheese to let it melt a bit.. hhhmmm.. lol

    • My husband loves those things. I had never heard of them until he made them one day. Must be an east coast thing.

    • YUM!! I was raised in the south so I’ve eaten my fair share of fried bologna sandwiches..:) I still eat them from time to time with the really soft white bread that sticks to the roof of your mouth I like them plain my husband puts mustard and cheese on his. Carrie you should give it a try.

  2. My mother makes something called bologna salad. You actually grind up the bologna, then it’s sort of like making tuna salad – mayo, relish….I dunno. It’s something people really like, or really don’t. I was never a huge fan, but other people seem to just love it.

I did get some of the hot dogs on sale, and I want to try those ‘corndog muffins’ that people talk about on blogs sometimes. From what I understand you pretty much just make corn muffins with slices of hot dog pushed down into them before you bake….corn dog flavors, I guess? I think my daughter would like them, and it would be a good afternoon snack once in a while.
