Daily Chatter: 10/29/12

Well.  We did have a nice weekend but it was finished with a nearly-sleepless night with a crabby 8-month-old.  I’m quite used to not sleeping through the night – I’ve been doing that for almost eight years straight – but a kid who won’t sleep is a whole different ball game.  Hopefully it was just a one-night thing and she’ll sleep like an angel tonight.  Or at least go back to her normal waking only two or three times.

So, today I’m functioning on a few hours of sleep and an entire Chocolove bar.  I even worked on balancing our business bank accounts this morning, which was perhaps not wise considering how frustrating that can be on normal amounts of sleep but I made good progress despite that.

I know, you shouldn’t need to “make progress” reconciling checking accounts, huh?  Well, for awhile our records were a mess and I finally got on top of them earlier this year.  But then I had a baby and got behind again so now it’s catchup time.  I will be staying on top of it from this point on – it’s not hard once I’m caught up!

Here’s a funny from the 5yo this weekend:  someone had some flatulence and she said “you need to say ‘excuse me‘ so it doesn’t smell”.  Well, if you’ve been spending money on expensive air fresheners, you should try that trick.

Cooking from the freezer… Right.

I’m trying to cook from the freezer this week and yet I’ve still managed to buy groceries at King Soopers, Sprouts, Safeway, and Target.  Wow, I’m all about keeping it real but maybe I shouldn’t have admitted that.  I didn’t spend much at any place but still, Carrie!  (Note: please don’t judge my use of plastic bags.)

Supper tonight will be Roasted Sesame-Ginger Chicken Thighs with Broccoli Slaw and another thing or two.  I’ve finally figured out that I can cut our meat costs if I make sure we have two good side dishes, so I’ve really been trying to make sure I don’t forget about the sides until 10 minutes to eat.  Of course, I don’t really feel like I’m spending less on groceries because prices are rising so fast, but I guess I’m still saving, just not spending less.

  1. What is with these sleepless babies?!? Mine was wide awake from 3 to 6 AM last night, ugh. Maybe it had something to do with Sandy?? Hopefully they’ll both do better tonight.

Your supper plans sound yummy! I’m trying out the Lamb Ragu with Mint for dinner this evening, along with some roasted carrots and onions with honey-thyme butter. Heading to the kitchen to start that now!

    • Maybe it IS Sandy! I’ll have to use that “excuse” this time instead of teething (my old standby excuse when a kid is not sleeping well and I want to believe it’s going to be temporary).

Would love to hear how the Lamb Ragu turns out!

  2. Had to chime in because we haven’t had a good night of sleep all weekend. 5 yr old with croup. We are having spare ribs slow cooked with potatoe pancakes and corn. Veggie is kids choice tonight. Hope the babies all sleep well tonight.
