Starbucks VIA is stronger than most instant coffees and works well in doctored-up coffee drinks and for baking too! Here are some ideas for using VIA instant coffee (besides the obvious mixing with water and drinking…)
One of my favorite ways to use up instant coffee (especially if it’s close to the “best by” date and I’d rather not drink it) is to mix a little of it into brownie batter before baking. It’s also good stirred into chocolate chip cookie batter — I think the hint of coffee flavor helps to balance the sweetness of the dessert.
Another way to use instant coffee in baking is with one of these coffee cake recipes: The Pioneer Woman’s Coffee Cake (Literally!), or this Coffee Swirl Coffee Cake. The Pioneer Woman’s recipe has a more intense coffee flavor and is perfect for coffee lovers like me! The second recipe has a more typical coffee cake batter, but the swirl portion is made with instant coffee instead of the usual cinnamon-sugar or streusel center.
This Chocolate Bar Fondue, flavored with instant coffee, would make a rich and likely popular dessert to serve at a holiday party. Several reviewers suggested leaving out the water in the recipe, and simply stirring and dissolving the instant coffee directly into the chocolate mixture.
Here’s an easy and tasty homemade frosting/filling recipe — Mocha Cream. It’s made with three ingredients: whipping cream, sugar, and instant coffee, and it’s great for all kinds of cakes and trifles or as a topping for hot cocoa! The coffee taste is obvious in this recipe, so if you’re not a coffee lover, you might want to slightly increase the sugar or reduce the amount of instant coffee.
Instant coffee as a drink can be fluffed up in lots of ways depending on your tastes. A few ideas include hot milk or half-and-half, chocolate syrup, caramel sauce, or vanilla, almond, or peppermint extract. This hot Mocha via VIA recipe looks like a simple one to try. If you’re wanting a cold drink, just throw everything in the blender with some ice and have a homemade frappe!
