  1. Definitely Costco! They carry a HUGE tub of organic, unrefined, cold-pressed extra virgin coconut oil (which is what you should be looking for) for very cheap. The brand is Nutiva.

  2. I second Costco! i’ve priced checked around and Costco has the price by far (including non organic). Also dont be afraid of the amount you get, you will be surprised how fast you use it.

  3. i haven’t checked prices at costco, sounds like they are great! but we don’t have a membership, so i order mine from vitacost.com. their brand is certified organic, extra virgin, unrefined… and it’s $21.49 for a 54 oz huge container! you can choose “set & save” and save an extra 10% – cancel at any time, no risk, no fees. plus, if you haven’t purchased anything there before, you can get a referral code for $10 off a $30 purchase. using these things, you can get 2, 54 oz. tubs for $28.68 (free shipping). that makes each tub $14.34. and yes, coconut oil has a ridiculously long shelf-life, so you shouldn’t need to worry about it going rancid before you can use it.

it’s great for baking in place of any other oils, frying at high temps, as a daily “supplement”, and for use in homemade body products like chapstick, lotion, etc. :)

  4. Is coconut oil better than pure olive oil? Can you use it in place of olive oil? I’d love some facts as to WHY it’s so good for you and what the advantages are of using that over olive oil, which I’ve always understood is so good for you. Thanks so much!

    • I recently read the book “The Coconut Oil Miracle” which explains in great detail why it is better for you. Olive oil is okay unless you heat it, which changes the molecular structure. I got the book from the library. King Soopers has LouAna brand 31.5 oz. for $7.89. It is also great for your skin.

  5. I have used Coconut oil for a while now but, honestly folks, a little goes a long way so, unless you deep fry , the $5.99 jar extra virgin
on sale at Sprouts this week will last a LONG time. This price is EXCELLENT, hope they don’t run out. Be sure to store it in the fridge, to keep it nice and fresh,I do.

  6. What size is that Sprouts jar for 5.99?

  7. I just had a thought that could potentially save money no matter where you buy it – I would recommend buying a smaller jar if you are just getting started using it to make sure you will actually use it. :) Coconut oil is an acquired taste if you will be using it in cooking, and if you are using it to make skincare products and the like you want to make sure you are going to actually make them.

Not that *I* would ever purchase too much coconut oil and not used it all. (Haha, my warning comes because of experience. ;)

  8. I know 78 fl oz sounds like way too much, but the great thing about coconut oil is that it is so versatile. I use it in place of butter, oils, shortening, etc. I don’t use in as a skincare product (even thought i heard it is amazing as lotion and chap stick, which i might have to try soon ;) ) and I have no problem using it up. But I agree with Carrie, maybe you should buy a small jar first and see how often you use it.

    • It’s versatile but it still tastes like coconut, LOL. ;)

      • It depends on the brand. I’ve tried Spectrum and LouAna, they both don’t have a coconut taste.

        • I have also only used LouAna, so far (I found it relatively cheap to use on my skin before learning ALL the benefits), and don’t find it to have any coconut taste. Coconut is NOT my favorite flavor.

          • I’d be curious to know if the flavorless oil still has all the health benefits. With olive oil, the kind that you can buy that doesn’t taste like olive oil is so processed it doesn’t have a lot of the nutrients left in it. Not sure if it’s the same with coconut oil.

  9. We don’t have a problem using it up either. It will keep for a very long time anyway. We use it for skin and hair care as well as baby lotion because of its antibacterial, antifungal, and healing properties. I am not fond of using it for cooking because of the strong taste, but you can use it as a supplement for the health benefits.

  10. According to “The Coconut Oil Miracle” the almost flavorless coconut oil has the same properties as the extra virgin type and is just as good for you. He recommends you use the one you prefer the taste of.

  11. I recently read a helpful article on the uses and overall understanding of coconut oil at: http://www.kitchenstewardship.com/2009/11/03/faqs-on-coconut-oil-and-how-to-use-it/

and also at http://simplemom.net/ where she has various uses mentioned and “recipes” for making mosturizers, toothpastes, deodorant, etc. out of it.

  12. Some of the bountiful baskets co-op locations have coconut oil. Just an idea if you want a smaller amount.
