Select Brunswick bowling alleys will be doing Bowl For Freedom nights this summer, where games of bowling are just 50¢ and proceeds will be donated to the veterans charity Bowlers to Veterans!  There is supposed to be one night a month through August; unfortunately, the only date that shows up on the site right now is the one for May so I’m not yet sure when they will be held in June, July, and August.

Regardless, the Brunswick on Circle be having their Bowl For Freedom night on Saturday, May 26th at 6 PM.  You can make a reservation and find out more here.

Don’t forget that kids can get lots of free bowling this summer if you sign them up for these free summer bowling programs!  And the Brunswick at Interquest is doing a great $9.99 deal on Sunday nights right now.

Wednesday, May 23rd, is not only the Air Force Academy graduation and Thunderbird air show, it’s also free Slurpee day at 7-Eleven!  Stop by a participating 7-Eleven and get a free 7.11 oz Slurpee, while supplies last.  (Seems like they sometimes do run out…)

I don’t have a comprehensive list of participating 7-Eleven locations, but I did notice the one at the corner of S. Carefree and Murray had a sign out advertising this deal.  Do you know of any others that are definitely participating?

Wednesday, May 23rd, is the Air Force Academy’s graduation ceremonies, and of course the air show by the Thunderbirds!  There’s no official place to sit and watch the show unless you have tickets to the stadium, but there’s lots of great places to watch (just please be sure to actually park your car to watch the show).

The Western Museum of Mining and Industry (Exit 156A on I-25, right across from the north Air Force Academy entrance) is inviting you to come enjoy a picnic lunch for a suggested parking donation of $5 – based on this picture from their Facebook page, it looks like they have a great view!  You can also then tour the museum with a $1 off discount before or after the air show.

Other places that readers have suggested watching in the past are Focus on the Family and the theatre/restaurant area at Interquest (though now that there are actually restaurats and whatnot up there, there may not be as much room to park and watch as there was in the past).  Just remember that you’ll likely be on private property wherever you watch, so be couretous.  (Not that you shouldn’t be courteous on public property, too!)

The show is slated to start around 12:30 – but times are approximate, and good places to watch fill up fast, so get there early.

Sacklunch Serenades, which are free to everyone, feature Tom O’Boyle, Bob Lillie and guest organists, playing the 1927 Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ installed in the City Auditorium, in 1976, rescued from the Chief (Burns) Theatre before it was demolished.

Silent films, accompanied on the organ, are performed at all programs as part of the experience of seeing silent films and hearing the sound effects and music with the organ, as originally seen and heard in the theaters.  - from CityAuditorium.org

Last week, we actually took watercolor paints and the kids painted the monkeys in the morning and then painted the chickens in the afternoon while we were waiting for the hippo show.  It was so much fun to be able to just relax for an hour and let them paint rather than rush through the zoo trying to see everything, like we do if we just purchase day passes.  (This isn’t a commercial, we are just really loving our zoo membership, LOL!)

Gleneagle Golf Club is offering a nice deal for family golfing this summer: on Sundays after 4:30 PM, kids can golf free (each child must have an accompanying, paying adult – sorry, they won’t let you let your kids loose on the course! ;).

High Altitude Rhubarb Farm in Black Forest is having their annual you-pick day in June! You can pick as much as you want on June 2nd and 3rd and it’s cheap: organic rhubarb for $3.00/lb for the first ten pounds, and $2.50/lb for everything you pick past ten pounds.

They have seven different varieties of fresh rhubarb, plus rhubarb and horseradish roots, local honey, and more!  Some of you went to this event last year and said it was a lot of fun, so don’t miss it if you’re a rhubarb fan.

The free splash parks and play fountains in Colorado Springs will be opening soon!  There are four that I know of – maybe you know of others?  Here’s the info I have:

The Julie Penrose Fountain at America the Beautiful Park will open on May 25th and runs daily from 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

The splash area at First and Main Town Center (in front of Cinemark Theatre) will open sometime around Memorial Day weekend – watch their Facebook page for the official announcement.

The Uncle Wilbur Fountain at Acacia Park will open on May 25th.  It starts running at 10:00 AM.

And, the Deerfield Hills Sprayground opens June 1st and runs from 10:00 AM to 5 PM, Monday-Friday; and 12:00 PM to 5 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

Starting Saturday (Armed Forces Day), active-duty military families can get a free annual pass to our national parks!  This is the pass that gets you in free to all national parks that charge an entrance fee, and is normally $80 to purchase.  You can pick it up with your military ID at any national park starting on May 19th.

This AP article says that “Each family member will also be able to obtain their own pass even if the service member is deployed or if they are traveling separately.”  Yay!

If you’re military, don’t forget to pick up your free breakfast at Chick-fil-A this week!

Just a reminder that you can visit the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center for free on the third Tuesday of every month!  That’s this coming Tuesday, May 15th.  They’re open from 10 AM to 8 PM and have several times throughout the day where you can take a guided tour.  Get more info here.

A friend emailed me this information about the Scholastic Book Fair: there will be one in Colorado Springs at the Doubletree Hotel on Cheyenne Mountain Blvd on May 17-20.  It’s open to “school employees, school district personnel, homeschool directors & teachers, Book Fair chairpeople, and Book Fair volunteers”; and they supposedly have discounts of up to 80% off!

Looks like you’ll need to sign up and get a pass to attend.  When you do that, you’ll also get a coupon for $10 off a $50 purchase or $25 off a $100+ purchase.
