Last week I received a flyer with updates to the King Soopers/City Market gas savings program. It appears it now functions similarly to Safeway’s – you can now redeem multiple rewards at once, making it possible to save up to $1 per gallon of gas. That scenario would occur when you spend $1,000 in grocery purchases during the specified period of time.
You’ll still earn 100 points for every $100 in grocery purchases (and for every $50 in gift card purchases and for every 2 eligible prescriptions filled), giving you 10 ¢ off per gallon, but you’ll be able to redeem multiple rewards at once, saving 10 ¢, 20 ¢, 30 ¢, or more at once. Overall, I think this is a better way of doing it for the consumer; however, unlike Safeway, where your rewards accumulate by the quarter, giving you a better chance at earning more, it appears King Soopers still accumulate by the month, which isn’t a whole lot of time to accumulate points.
King Soopers is one of my top stores to shop for deals, but remember, if you’re not shopping strategically there, you’re probably going to pay way more than necessary. And keep in mind that if you’re shopping there just because of the gas discount, you’re still not saving much – if you save 10 ¢ off a fill-up of a 20 gallon tank, that’s only $2!
