Paper or plastic? Reusable bags or none at all?

Published January 26, 2009 by Carrie in Grocery Deals

I read this morning that some Colorado legislators are trying to pass a measure intended to outlaw plastic bags.  Not only do I think this a perfect waste of time for our elected officials to be considering, but I NEED those plastic bags!  With two kids in diapers we use them all the time for smelly ones, not to mention using them as trash can liners and who knows what else.

The legislation proposes a six-cent charge for plastic bags (and a three-year phase-out of plastic for larger retailers), so of course I’d convert to reusable bags.  But I really need those plastic bags! :)

This is a good time to insert that I am 99% sure that Safeway and King Soopers (maybe Albertson’s, anyone know?) give a five-cent per bag discount if you use your own bags (reusable or “re-used” plastic).  I personally haven’t ever done it, because (see above) and I also tend to buy smaller amounts of groceries at a time, so to me the hassle of bringing in bags for a measly $.25 discount isn’t worth it.  But, if you’re considering using reusable bags (or already do), make sure you get your discount!

One more note before I stop talking about plastic bags: I’m pretty sure I saw a blip in the World Market flyer this week that said they’re giving away reusable bags this week (one per customer, supplies limited).
