A peek into the Isaac’s family life

Published January 31, 2010 by Carrie in Expired

I think I’ve decided to start a monthly family update so that you can see what we’ve been up to as a family, and can see some of our frugal successes, frugal failures, favorite recipes, and more.  Not sure what all these update posts will include, but I’ll try to do one once a month!

What We’ve Been Up To

If you haven’t picked up on it via Twitter, we’re expecting our fourth child at the end of August!  So, I guess now you know that some of my grocery impulse purchases are maybe sort of justified?  Man, I’ve been feeling pretty good but hungry!

The only bad thing about this pregnancy so far has been going to my midwife’s office for a first appointment and realizing I weighed 10 lbs more than I thought.  That is just not a cool way to start out, you know?

Anyway, we’re super-duper excited that God has blessed us with a fourth child and are excitedly anticipating his or her arrival in late August.  My biggest concern right now is how on earth am I going to go grocery shopping with four children ages five and under?!

Frugal Successes

We used Christmas money from great-grandparents to purchase our three year old a practically new tricycle for $8 at Goodwill.  The kids have been riding it inside, but of course there was a great desire on the part of big brother for a bike of his own.

We didn’t find a bike, but after a couple of weeks of waiting, we did find a Little Tykes car at Goodwill for $10.  I think we are teaching our children something about the value of money, patience, and prayer by teaching them that we can’t always buy what we want to buy right away – sometimes we have to wait, earn, and pray for God to provide the appropriate thing at the appropriate price in His time!

They’re both thrilled to have their own bikes now and can’t wait for spring to come so they can ride outside.

Frugal Failures

Um, yeah.  McDonald’s $1 large soft drinks and McDoubles were my downfall this month.  See “extra 10 lbs I didn’t know about” above. ;)

Recipes We Tried And Liked

Spicy Stir-Fried Chicken and Bok Choy with Crispy Noodle Cake – this recipe is from Cook’s Illustrated, but I’m linking to a different site because the Cook’s Illustrated site is for members only. Anyway, we really liked this recipe – Jeremy said it was “different” than the Asian dishes I usually make, and he really liked it. The kids? Not so much.

Caramel Cream Cheese Dip – this isn’t a recipe, really… Just dump a brick of cream cheese and some caramels in a pan and melt them, then use it as a dip for apples.  Awesome.

Fact You Didn’t Know

We don’t eat casseroles.  None.  There is one Mexican Spaghetti recipe we eat on occasion that is kind of like a casserole, but it’s cooked in a skillet on top of the stove, so it’s not really a casserole at all.  We eat meat, potatoes, pasta, rice, veggies – but I don’t dare throw it together like a casserole. ;)

So, that’s our life in a nutshell!  Hope you enjoyed the scatterbrained recap.

Did you get your free Toys R Us/Babies R Us gift card the other day?  Mine just arrived via email last night, hooray!  Now to get there to use it before it expires on Feburary 20th.

Super Savings Saturday: my King Soopers mega Mega Event shopping trip

Published January 30, 2010 by Carrie in Grocery Deals

Here’s my King Soopers mega Mega Event shopping trip.  I almost never spend this much money in one transaction!  Let me tell you, it was scary to see the total before instant discounts and coupons.

So, I paid $91.85 and saved 63%.  My total without coupons and discounts would have been about $248.71!  I feel like I did pretty good even if I did spend almost $100…  There were more than one or two impulse purchases in there, or things I bought because we just needed them.

Our cupboards are starting to look full again after the Eat From The Pantry Challenge!

I’m not done with the Mega Event yet – still have a couple of coupons to use, and things to buy for the Kraft Back To School Rebate (unfortunately not available online anymore, it was a booklet you had to request last fall).  And, I’ll also be submitting two SC Johnson rebates (PDF link) for a total of $10 back.

I also spent about $21 at Sunflower Market on produce this week, and need to buy some more groceries before I leave for the BlissDom blogging conference next week so my husband and kids have something to eat!

So, even if $91 was a lot to spend for me, I’d say I got a lot of food for the money!  Here’s the scoop on the King Soopers Mega Event deals.

Two coupon inserts on Sunday – more coupons for the Mega Event?

Published January 29, 2010 by Carrie in Uncategorized

Looks like we’ll be getting two coupon inserts in Sunday’s paper – one Smartsource and one Redplum.  You can go to [scp] to get a general idea of what we’ll be getting, but of course keep in mind that inserts vary by region.  For example, I would be shocked if we got the coupon for Daisy sour cream – we get them for Daisy cottage cheese a fair amount, but never for sour cream, even when other regions do.

I’m seeing a few coupons that will match up to the Mega Event at King Soopers!  Head on over to [scp] to see the preview.

Free and cheap kids’ workshops this weekend

Published January 29, 2010 by Carrie in Expired

Here’s a cheap kids’ craft workshops going on this weekend:

Michael’s is holding a kid’s craft clinic from 10 AM to 1 PM this Saturday – your children ages 5-12 will be able to decorate a Valentine’s frame for $1!  You may want to call ahead to confirm that your nearest location is holding this workshop.  I’d imagine you can drop in anytime between 10 and 1 but you should probably confirm that, too!  Thanks, Mommy’s Wish List!

And, the Home Depot is holding a free kids’ workshop next Saturday, February 6th,  from 9 AM to noon for ages 5-12.  They’ll be building a car display (see image on the right), and it’s first-come, first-served.  More info here.

Coming up on the 13th, Lowe’s will hold their Build and Grow Clinic from 10 AM to 11 AM and they’ll be building a jewelry organizer.  You need to register online for the Lowe’s workshops.

Thanks to the commentors who pointed out I had the dates all wrong and there’s one this weekend, one next weekend, and one the next!

It’s the last weekend for the awesome kids eat free deals at Chipotle and Boston Market.  Let’s hope they were such a rousing success they decide to continue.

In case this is the first you’ve heard about it, kids eat free at Boston Market on Saturday and Sunday.  They’ll give you two free kids meals per adult (kids must be present).  Chipotle serves kids free from their new kids menu on Sunday (one kid per adult purchase).

Happy dining out!
