Here’s an interesting story from the AP about Walmart’s new “rollback” campaign. They’re rolling back prices on about 10,000 items. The article noted this:
The gap on prices is nowhere near as wide as it once was, or as many consumers perceive it to be,” said Wall Street Strategies analyst Brian Sozzi. “Wal-Mart just markets its ‘everyday low price’ message at a superior level relative to rivals.
So true! Walmart used to be champion of low prices… But once that reputation was well-established, their prices began creeping back up. In fact, the article says that the price advantage to shopping at Walmart is now just 12%.
While I truly believe that you can get better deals on almost all groceries by watching sales at the “other” stores, I was in Walmart last week and did find that gallon milk was $1.78 and eggs were $0.88/dozen, definitely cheaper than they are anywhere else! With the way Walmart’s prices tend to fluctuate, though, I wouldn’t count on that price being available this week or next.
