Smell your way to the Savory Spice Shop!

Published September 17, 2010 by Carrie in Grocery Deals

Have you been to Savory, the new-ish spice store in downtown Colorado Springs?  If you like cooking at all, I think you’ll love this place!

Savory opened earlier this year and carries a wide variety of freshly-ground spices.  I was told the spices are ground weekly in Denver, which definitely means they’re fresh – much fresher than the spices you’ll buy in a jar, and I would imagine probably fresher than what other stores sell in bulk.  There were lots of different spices and seasoning blends – I think I saw at least six different types of peppercorns!

My mom bought some Alderwood Smoked Salt for Jeremy, and it smells divine. I told her Jeremy would probably put it in his sock drawer or something – it’s definitely a man scent! We haven’t figured out just the right thing to use it on yet, as it’s a strong scent but somewhat delicate seasoning ingredient as you can’t just keep adding salt until you taste the smoky flavor. :)  They had a good amount of organic spices as well.

I wasn’t really prepared to write a full “review” so I didn’t write down many prices, but I would guess that while it’s probably a bit more expensive than buying spices in bulk at Whole Foods or Natural Grocers, the freshness may be worth it, and may even allow you to use less.

The one price I did write down was cinnamon sticks – they were $11/lb and looked to be very high quality.  I’ve bought cinnamon sticks for around $8/lb at Rancho Liborio, and while I was perfectly happy with them, they were definitely not quite as pretty-looking as the ones at Savory.

Most of the spices were available in as little as half an ounce to an ounce, which is often more than enough for a single recipe, and allows you to try out spices you aren’t sure you’ll like or use a lot of.  Buying spices in “bulk” is a good deal to me because you can buy as little as you want, which means less waste and a much fresher product.  An employee will measure out your desired amount into a small plastic bag, or you can buy spices in jars (but that is probably not so much of a bargain).

I would love to hear if you’ve been to Savory and what you thought about it! Have you tried any of their seasoning blends?
