This weekend is the annual Colorado Balloon Classic at Memorial Park! Dozens of hot air balloon teams come together for a really fun festival that’s been a Colorado Springs tradition for 36 years.
Get up early on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday mornings to watch the balloons lift off at 7 AM; and on Saturday and Sunday nights, balloonists will inflate the balloons for the “Balloon Glo” at 7:30 PM. There is also live music, concessions, and other events going on throughout the weekend; be sure to check out the full schedule here.
We’ve been to the hot air balloon event several times and it’s a lot of fun – definitely not something you get to do every day! However, I will caution you that the balloons only inflate for the Glo and lift off when weather conditions permit. There was one time we headed to the park for the Glo, locked the keys in the car, and then found out that they’d canceled the Glo due to rain (which had quit an hour before it was scheduled to begin). So that was a fun way to spend $100 on a locksmith. (But it gave me a great anecdote to relay every time I talk about the event. ;)
And a couple of years ago, we got up early to see them lift off and then found out when we got there that it was too windy to lift off, so we got to see some of them inflate but not lift off. So, the excitement that got us out of bed at 6 AM on a holiday was kind of deflated.
But the one year that wedid manage to see them lift off, it was really fun! :) I’m not telling you all that so that you’re too scared to go, but just as a warning to maybe check the website or media outlets before you go. They haven’t been great about updating that kind of thing in the past but it’s worth checking before you leave.
