Daily Chatter: 1/17/13

Published January 17, 2013 by Carrie in Expired, Home & Family

the-apple-dumpling-gangOn Sunday night we made pizza (Jeremy is a pretty awesome pizza-tosser) and watched The Apple Dumpling Gang via Amazon Instant Video (classic 1976 Disney movie starring Don Knotts).  We don’t often have family movie nights, partly because it’s hard to find good stuff to watch that’s available to rent and partly because our kids hate anything that’s remotely scary, which is about 90% of even the children’s movies that are made today.

I remember watching The Apple Dumpling Gang over and over as a kid but I wasn’t sure if they’d like it, since they prefer animated movies.  But, no one turned away because they were scared and the next day at lunch, they all told me about their favorite parts, which meant a re-telling of almost the whole movie.  Score!  Finally, something we can watch that is clean, not violent, and entertaining (even if the theatrical quality is, well, 1976 quality).  We’ll be watching The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again and Hot Lead And Cold Feet soon.

I found this discussion about mixing cookies by hand or with a mixer over at my friend Lynn’s site interesting.  I have always mixed cookies with a mixer – a handheld one until I got a Kitchen Aid for Christmas a couple of years ago.  But, it sounds like it really makes a difference to mix it by hand.  Do any of you do that?

Awhile back I mentioned that the 2yo was potty training.  Well, she’s basically potty-trained but not the other-trained, so I’m still keeping two in diapers all day and three at night.  I’m thinking that I will save about $10 a week once I can completely stop buying diapers, but that will be a year or two and I’m guessing that the rising costs of everything else will more than eat up those savings.  Almost makes me want to potty train the almost-1yo just so I can enjoy the savings for a few months before they disappear. ;)

We had supper at 5:15 last night – wow, two nights in a row that we’ve eaten at 5:30 or earlier!  Last night we had time to play a family game of hide-and-seek, and then I played house with the girls while Jeremy played Ticket To Ride with the 7yo.  We have kind of run out of hiding places in our house (six playing people = five hiding spots every round), so we’ve had to get creative.  The best hiding spot ever is to hide in the bottom of a laundry basket and pile the laundry back on top of yourself (doesn’t work for my 6’3″ husband, hehe).
