Apples and pears are finally available for under $1.00/lb this week! Sprouts has nine varieties of apples for $0.49/lb, as well as organic Red Delicious for $1.00/lb. Also, organic bosc pears (3 lb bag) are $1.99, and organic d’anjou pears are $1.29/lb. At King Soopers, organic apples and pears are both on sale for $1.00/lb.
Here are eight recipe ideas, and most of these would work well with either apples or pears!
This Pork Tenderloin with Apples looks like a delicious main course dish. I’m guessing you could easily substitute pork chops for the tenderloin or even use chicken breasts.

Here’s a great way to use pears as part of a meal — Rachael Ray’s Arugula and Pear Salad, an easy but tasty recipe!
These Grilled Gouda, Ham, and Apple Sandwiches are a healthy, grown-up version of the regular old grilled cheese. I’m sure they would be great with pears instead of apples, too!
This Homemade Crockpot Applesauce is a must-try, especially if you have an excess of apples on hand. Applesauce is one of those foods that is just so much better when it’s homemade rather than store bought!
The Pioneer Woman’s Apple Fritters are always a hit at our house. The original recipe calls for regular flour, but I’ve also tried it with gluten-free baking mix and it turned out great!
Here are a few dessert recipes to try:
Cheddar Pear Pie — My mom makes this pie on occasion and it’s one of my favorite desserts! The cheese topping might seem odd, but the tangy flavor is a perfect complement to the sweet pear filling.

Poached Pears with Creamy Pecan Sauce — This would be a nice dessert to serve for company. The creamy pecan sauce looks like it has a texture similar to caramel. Yum!
Uncle Bob’s Fresh Apple Cake — I’m not sure who Uncle Bob is, but this recipe from Paula Deen sounds delicious. (I think I would substitute butter for part of the oil because I love butter flavor in baked goods!)
Apple and Pear Crisp — Ina Garten’s recipe for fruit crisp is one of the best. Many reviewers mentioned that they reduced the amount of citrus in the recipe, but many others said that they love the citrus undertones. Take note and adjust the recipe to your own tastes!
Will you be stocking up on apples or pears this week? What’s your favorite way to eat them?
