I am oh so happy to report that the baby (who is now about 1.5 years) seems to have come out of the grumpy stage and is a very pleasant person to be around most of the time! My last two have had a particularly difficult time between the ages of 1 and 1.5 or thereabouts, and were pretty much constantly inconsolably grumpy. I think it might be related to not being able to communicate as well as they’d like, or it might be that the amount of stimulation they get in our house is too much and they just need to chill alone in their beds for a couple of hours in the AM. (Frankly, I am often overstimulated by the activity in our house and wish for a morning nap!) Either way, I am grateful to have a happy baby again.
Remodeling update: the electrical work is now mostly done, and we are hanging drywall in the kitchen. We have modern wiring and outlets and light switches!
I cleaned the paneling in the kitchen – it’s one of those things that you can wipe down five times and still get dirt off, but it’s not *too* bad in this room. There was a lot of grime on the ceiling, and a few splatters that I can’t get off with anything but my fingernail. :/ (Might try a putty knife soon, but I don’t want to damage the wood.)
We are leaving the wood paneling in most places (never thought I would have a house with knotty pine paneling – our last house was a totally different style – but we are embracing it), but we are painting the bathroom white. I’m a little nervous about painting it because it is so shiny and I’m afraid the paint won’t stick, but I have cleaned it well and we are planning on using several coats of oil-based primer. I’m going to prime over the knots several times before I get the roller out, because I know those are going to show through. Any tips from knotty pine-painting experience?
I’m staring to feel like we are starting to make a lot of progress, and at the same time don’t think it will ever be done. We are completely gutting 1,000 square feet right now (about 1/3rd of the house) so when it’s done, we’ll have a lot of “brand new” living space but it’s the getting there that’s taking forever…
