I wanted to post a reminder about the two main ways you can get a free annual pass to our national parks – it’s saved us about $75 over the past month, between a couple of visits to Black Canyon of the Gunnison and one to Great Sand Dunes!
If you have a 4th grader, you can get a pass that’s valid during their 4th grader school year and the following summer. There’s a form to fill out and print online, and then they give you a card when you use it for the first time. The 4th grader must be with you every time you use the pass, and you must print out the initial paper pass; they won’t accept a digital version.
If you are active-duty military or a dependent, you can get a free annual pass when you show your military ID. This pass will cover yourself and anyone in the same vehicle (for the parks that charge a per-vehicle fee). Disabled veterans can receive a free lifetime pass (which also admits the people in the same vehicle).
